Q. How long have you been creating?
A. This year marks 43 years of creating and designing. I started as a greenhouse growers’ assistant and moved into a floral design position.
From there I opened retail floral and gift stores then moved into a wholesale buyer and designer position, delivering educational programs to the floral and gift industry. For the last 30 years, I have been designing and merchandising for the import floral and gift industry.
Q. How long have you been with Sullivans?
A. I have been a full-time employee with Sullivans for three years.
Q. What is your favorite thing about Sullivans?
A. My favorite thing about Sullivans is having the creative freedom to design beautiful products and merchandise in our four amazing showrooms to share with the world. Our showrooms give buyers from around the world the opportunity to touch and see the great product we offer firsthand; the showrooms also give our customers design inspiration to use and adapt in their own individual stores.
Q. Describe a typical day for you.
A. There really isn’t a typical day for me, we work in a fast-paced environment. My computer turns on at 7:30 every morning. One day I may be doing research on new trends and products, the next I could be flying to a showroom for merchandising set-ups. There are days we are working closely with customers. The typical day is looking forward to new opportunities that arise.
Q. How do you get your inspiration for new products?
A. I spend a lot of time doing research on current trends for today’s home and garden. This gives me the inspiration to create something new to fit into the current trends. Nature is God’s gift to me; nature gives me inspiration for color, texture, and styles of realness. I have a great social network of friends from within the industry, my friends are always willing to give me great suggestions and inspirational support.
Q. What is your favorite thing to create?
A. My favorite thing to create is a peaceful collection that is adaptable to fit into a variety of lifestyles. I most enjoy creating a simple but strong statement that expresses the beauty of nature.
Q. What is your favorite color?
A. My favorite color would be hard to choose only one. But I do find myself drawn to hues of green, whites, and creams.
Q. What is your creative outlet outside of work?
A. My creative outlet outside of work is spending time in my woodshop getting my hands dirty and creating something from natural wood materials, some of my best creations have been there.
Q. Who are the people behind the artist? Who helps you, inspires you, etc.?
A. My mother and father and my family have always been my greatest support, always ready to jump in and help with whatever the project was. Today working at Sullivans I’m lucky to have great showroom managers and showroom staff that are supportive and helpful to me. They are second to none.
Q. If you could create anything, what would it be?
A. Hmmm! Hard question. There are so many opportunities here, so when I the notion strikes me, look out world, it is going to be a good one.
